I wasn’t feeling my best on arrival at Newcastle, on account of playing a jungle set at The Proper in Manchester - where i was joined on stage by the mc Dub FX - the previous night, and not sleeping in between (i blame kids and old women on the train). Luckily the sun was shining and i was soon tucking into proper greasy fish & chips.
The Rollies crew were all great, must be something about the north east people - they are always up for it. The festival was right up on the moors above Durham, and the turnout was good. The rig on offer was a combination of two smaller systems and sounded devasting when installed in the barn. Trouser flapping was definitely on the menu.
what a weekend. red o’regan is a superhero. he managed to keep so many balls in the air, tending to the needs of at least 13 guest artists from abroad, me included. the night was well organised, the soundsystems excellent and the crowd were great fun with no attitude.
particular highlights for me were ebola’s booty bass set, beatwifes amazing max/msp mashup machine, sam fez, ed droids with his very musical breakcore and the dubstep room downstairs.
i headlined the second room, meaning i missed cardopusher but we had a chance to chat and compare setups so it was all good.
Before my visit to Cork in March, I was interviewed by the regional newspaper. The interview is pretty accurate, although I am cited as a Drum n Bass DJ (!!).

Another great night, thanks to everyone at Audacious, particularly the Toms, Dan and Gavin!! I played the headline slot for 81 minutes in total. MDS was a hard act to follow, so I broke it down and eased the crowd back in with a little dubstep and ragga jungle, steadily progressing through the mashup to a breakcore frenzy at the end. At one point the whole night was teetering on the brink of collapse as we
had power issues and a distinct lack of subbass but the issues were quickly resolved and the night went down like a storm.
Just recorded another live show with Pete Juxtaposeur, this time as agentblu, my ambient chilled other half. i’ve been writing bits of downtempo music since 2002 and this is a rare chance to get some of it aired.
The show will be broadcast on the last thursday of april, at 9pm(BST) via the Sound Unsound Network, and later archived for download on the Skip To The End homepage.
Hadn’t been on a plane for a while and I was worried what airport security would make of me travelling with nothing but a case full of breakcore apparatus and a toothbrush. Luckily my little wheely case stows nicely in the overhead luggage compartment and the plane was half empty anyway, so no-one clocked the fact that it weighed nearly double the 6kg allowance. Its a strange feeling to travel in the evening with a bunch of holidaymakers and tired business execs when you know full well you’re on course to wreak havoc at some unknown venue.
Big thanks to Gearoid, Paddy, Man-G, the crazy Polish DJ, Charlie, Tim and everyone else who’s names I’ve forgotten. It was also nice to have a sound engineer on hand who knew the rig and was able to help me get my output eq’d properly for the room. Its not easy to turn up somewhere to a bunch of total strangers and try to party but you made my visit so memorable, and I really look forward to coming back some time soon. UK promoters take note, a little hospitality is not to be underestimated and really helps to make artists feel comfortable in unfamiliar territory.
The quality of the other DJs was high, with some good performances especially the Polish guy who was dropping some ragga stormers and a few classics to build up the heat earlier on in the evening.
Photos are in the gallery, hopefully some more are on the way.
Filthy, filth, filthy. The east coast massive certainly know how to run tings. They put me on quite early but I managed to get the crowd into it after the Peace Off tunes started coming out. Props to the VJ and the guy who installed the rig - the management were tearing their hair out over the insane amounts of bass, concerned about their impact on the structure of the building I guess. 4 twin folded 18″ bass bins and a pair of mid tops stuck in the middle of the room soundclash style!
I don’t have any pics from the night but if you do, get in touch.

After the Cambridge gig I shall cruise over to Norwich to record a live set to be broadcast on www.livewire1350.com. The show is called ‘Parlour Games for the Disenchanted’ and is hosted by Dean and Sam. Its going out on 1st March at 10.30 pm.
Uprizing marks Hoonboys first visit to Cambridge. Hosted at Cambridge United Football Club and with a lineup of both locals and widelyireknowned breakcore luminaries:
. . . on the site at the minute, breakcore taking a back seat with things being dark and wintery as January often is. I have my head down at school, currently learning about the differences in slope characteristics of Neve, Pultec, Avalon and a few other EQs not to mention the Digidesign exams which are looming.
I have quite a few shows booked over the next few months, as well as an imminent house move with the chance to have a proper studio again so you can expect more live sets on the site and a few hoonboy dubpate exclusives. I have a few tunes that I’m writing on a slow burn, some solo and a collaboration too, although it will be a while before anything is released as my production is improving steadily as I progress through the course and the mastering module is yet to come. I have been reliably informed that this will include some input from the mastering engineer at Abbey Road Studios in London.

Here is the live set that Norwegian breakcore act Kamerat Tord played at Spasibar. Check out his myspace site and listen to the song “Loona”. My fave track at the moment!
Coming up to ease the new year blues, and just in time for the first paycheck in ages, Sonic Feud returns to Manchester with a new venue and bolstered crew.
Bringing you sounds from The Teknoist (planet Mu), Hoonboy (death$ucker), Kanner, The Septic Insurgent and Mission.
Back in 1991 at the age of 12 I bought myself two turntables & a mixer and founded together with an american friend the Hip Hop- project “MC D & DJ Freeze” . Through this I could make my first experience on stage.
Already in 1994 I was one of the resident-Dj’s in the “legendary” Ohm-Club (Mannheim). I also spinned my records in the Milk!-Club.
A party with DJ Hype in may 1994 probably had the bigest influence on me and I was able to learn a lot from him. My Hip Hop influences helped me quite much and I continued to develop my technical skills. Read the rest of this entry »
Foundation Stepper has selected a mix of dubwise, jungle and reggae beats out and about and around Melbourne since 2001. His reggae, dub and downbeat residencies and support slots include gigs with The Red Eyes, Chant Down, Ruffneck Souljahs, Livewire and Dialekt.
He has also played gigs in NZ and Japan, appearing at Disco Beans, Osaka as well as some other venue where the reggae heads were quite confused by what he was playing.
His reggae sets sway towards a roots focus, foundation era tunes and nuff 70’s dubwise… with a healthy serving of tricky dancehall riddims and outernational dub and ragga experiments…
Foundation Steppers jungle sets are a polyrhythmic mash-up of new school ragga sounds, toxic dancehall and concrete jungle with smatterings of breakcore, dub bass and eleven secret herbs and spices. Read the rest of this entry »
The Sock Monster is a rare, turntable wielding creature from the outback of Australia.
His unique mashed up style serves up toxic dancehall, dub bass and ragga toasts with a healthy dollop of broke beats.
The Sock Monster has been represented on the website of the legendary Mashit jungle label.
He’s been known to galavant with the creepy old Russian which known as Baba Yaga, who rides around in a mortar and pestle, has a hut on chicken legs, and iron teeth.
Well, according to the antipodeans, hoon means dangerous, reckless, or antisocial behaviour and their website encourages people to contact the police. I urge you not to do this if you see me, as i pose no personal threat.
” The anti-hoon package also includes a wheel clamping program, where cars are immobilised and dumped in their yard at home. ”
Sonically dangerous, musically reckless and likely to get my wheels clamped for antisocial behaviour. That is a Hoonboy.
I arrives at The Croft at about 11, after a train ride down from Manchester. Luckily, I was just in time to see Parasite v General Disarray. It was a close battle, in fact the format of the night works really well and encourages ingenuity on the part of the artists.
We all disagreed on the judging and ultimate winner but it made a nice change to the normal format of such events.
Here are the results:
1st Round:
Defazed bt The Fez The Sherif bt Autyren Spaghetti Machete bt Gyu General Disarray bt Parasite
Semi-Final:
Defazed bt The Sherif General Disarray bt Spaghetti Machete
Dave Refusenik is a transplanted DJ originally from Moscow via Boston and now Buenos Aires. With all that traveling there’s no wonder his newest mixtape “Kold Krussian” is so cross-culturally fresh.
Mixing in tons of genres in an hour set is nothing new for this DJ, his sets at Zizek, among other parties, have proven that. His energy is contagious and his blends are sweet.
Refusenik dixit – “With this mix I was looking to create a set of songs that span many different genres while maintaining a sense of flow from one track to the next. I have been lucky enough to meet and perform with many amazing DJs and producers in Boston (DJ C, Baltimoroder) and Buenos Aires (Oro11, El Hijo De La Cumbia, El Remolón, Daleduro), so I also wanted to showcase their considerable talents through this mix.
It’s been several months since the last Goatlab back in May, but the legendary night returns to a new venue in Bristol, with a fortification of management types to make it once again the best goatrave in the south west.
i have just made a new binaural beat in the theta range for the purposes of sleeping. it begins around 7hz dropping to 1 or 2hz over 20 minutes. listening on headphones is essential for the process to work, as is getting left and right the correct way round.
for those of you that don’t know, binaural beats are a way of controlling the frequency of your brain and therefore your mental state using phase modulation. there’s plenty more info on wikipedia
this is best put on an ipod as the only track in the playlist. obviously don’t put it on when you’re riding your bike.
This set was awesome to watch. Rob controlled Ableton on his laptop using a Nintendo Wii controller, basically meaning hands free control. You couldn’t tell where the performing stopped and the dancing began!!
Although not strictly rekkidz, you can download some of the tracks that have been featured in various mixes and podcasts around the world on the mashups page at the top of the site.
50p Wonkstep (a tune I wrote with an ear infection so the bass is out of key) appears on the April Goatlab Radio broadcast. Check their page for full details.
Wow, what a fantastic night! It was awesome to play alongside cDatakill, Soundbites, Parasite and Microphyst. Armin did an excellent job organising his troops to transform Timbuk2 into a triple-arena filthy rave pit, and the crowd did an excellent job of showing their appreciation. Soundbites controlled his entire set by waving a nintendo wii controller, and cDatakill came all the way from Denver, Colorado to impress us with his syncopated horror trancecore.
